A WHOLE TENT-FULL OF FANS, FRIENDS, AND SPORTSWRITERS SHOWED UP TO APPLAUD WILMINGTON COUNCIL'S MOVE.  MAYOR JAMES BAKER GOT A RESOUNDING ROUND OF APPLAUSE WHEN HE MADE THIS SUGGESTION:

"SOME DAY WE SHOULD CONSIDER NAMING THIS  THE AL CARTWRIGHT STADIUM"

That would make a lot of sense, because the field is used by many local High School teams, and Cartwright once said:  "Every town has a high school and that should be the backbone of news coverage."
The retired sportswriter and columnist stepped up to the mike and did his best imitation of Sinatra, crooning, "When I was 91, it was a very good year."
The Mayor also got off a good line, mentioning Cartwright's broad influence, saying "You can't go into any restaurant these days without seeing his old trademark "Ala Carte'"

THE NAME SAYS IT ALL - IT'S NOW
